此行不虚--美国学生对2010年AFS国际夏令营的评价

为期六周的2010年暑假AFS中华文化国际夏令营很快就要结束了。营员们开心吗?有收获吗?千里迢迢不虚此行吗?夏令营好坏如何?我们全文登载美国学生保罗的来信,并附参考译文,读者不难从中找到问题的答案。

Dear Zhao Laoshi,
I would like to start this letter off by saying how much I appreciate everything you've done for all of the American students here in Changzhou.  We are all really grateful to you and to Changzhou No. 1 Middle school for hosting us these last six weeks.  I want to start off by saying how I liked our culture lessons in the afternoon, specifically Tai Chi, Chinese fancy knots, and the Chinese drawing/calligraphy.  Those culture classes were a lot of fun, and I feel like I was able to experience a small part of Chinese culture through them.  We were able to interact with people while learning them too, so that made the experience all the better.
I would like to say a few things about the Chinese language course.  I feel that I didn't learn as much as I could have.  I have studied one year of Chinese prior to coming here, and a lot of the topics we covered are the same.  I think that the curriculum was good for beginners.  However, I think the way the book was presented to us could be improved.  We learned words and phrases, but we did not learn how to construct sentences.  Without learning grammar, we limit the amount of things we are able to say.  I think that grammar should be taught along with the books.  I have learned a lot of new vocabulary from the book and the teacher, but I am not able to make sentences with them.  Also, I think that the Hanzi tests should have been spaced evenly throughout the six weeks instead of having a 40 character test everyday for the last two weeks.  It was very overwhelming to have to learn 40-60 new characters a night, and many of us spent many hours every night studying for the character test we were told about that day.  It is a lot harder on the memory if we learn things quickly, so I think that next year's course should have tests every week rather than every day.
I really liked the trips that were scheduled for us.  I really enjoyed going to the Expo, Wuxi, Hangzhou, and all of the other places that you took us to.  I feel like I got to see past the touristy part of China and into the real life of the Chinese, which was something that I really wanted to experience from this opportunity to be in China.  We had enough schedule to where we were able to see everything, yet we still had some free time to explore the locations on our own, which was nice to let us buy souvenirs and things.
All in all, I am glad that I was placed in Changzhou.  I feel that I experienced a lot of things that the other AFS cities did not experience.  Thank you so much for all the time and effort you've placed into making our trip what it was.  I know that it must have been stressful at times.  We really appreciate it.

Sincerely,
Paul Simpson
