Ever—lasting crazy English
yaoyi
Yesterday, the director of Crazy English Mr. Li Yang came to our school to give an inspiring speech to all the senior students in our school. Everybody was so highly motivated by his passion and enthusiasm for English that all of us are injected with an impulse to spare no efforts to learn English. Actually, every incident and every occasion can offer us a perfect opportunity to practise English. What a pity that it has been four years since I wrote a thesis in English last time. So I try to write my reflection about the speech in English, just intending to polish my written English, without any intention to show off.
We admire Li Yang as a hero, but for me, I would rather prefer to choose his spirits as my precious gains. Speaking fluent English is by no means playing cool. It is a hard task requiring perseverance, patience, diligence and persistence! I do not want to deny the fact that different person is born with different language gifts, and some man even has a marvelous talent to recite or mimic. Take Mr. Li for example. He can mimic President Bush’s speech strikingly vividly, so as the Indian or Arabian English. But we should make it clear that it doesn’t mean every talented person can learn English well, or the person who has poor ability will have no future in English study. The ultimate purpose of learning English is to learn without guidance. So we have to grasp every opportunity to perfect our English. However, the process is rather dull or monotonous, but with determination, with endless passion for study , you can absolutely surpass every obstacles you encounter on the way
Some students emphasize that they do have a strong interest in English, but due to boring classes, their interests diminish gradually. Actually, the so-called interest is not the jealousy of others’ fluent English. You usually have such kind of interest when you are thrilled at your peer’s excellent English, and just imagine you also have a strong desire for English. However, when you are devoted to learning English on such a short-time impulse, your interest will quickly be lost after you have done much dull repetition. So the interest of learning English must be accompanied by persistence. I’d like to share my experience in learning English with you. I used to be self-abased in my English because I didn’t have a clear sense of grammar in my mind, and I always did poorly in my exam. English major was on no account my first choice. When I entered college, I was totally conquered by my professor’s profound knowledge, which provided me with an abundant source of motivation. I cannot say my English is very good, but I really made great progress in my English. I enlarged my vocabulary on the train home, I tried to translate every advertisement I saw in the street, I challenged myself by thinking in English, and I even murmured some English words in my dreams. I have to confess I did have a struggling and torturing time when I immersed myself in study, but it really pays. I regret I was not mature enough at that time for I quitted my passion for study after my graduation, or it would be better than now.
Many students, including many teachers, are very excited after yesterday’s activity. As an English teacher, I hope this can be a very precious chance to motivate students’ appetite for study. What we should do is to help them create as many opportunities as possible, and also teach them how to do so. Enjoy losing face. Shout aloud! Success is not a thing to be waited for, but a thing to go after.
